The library in Hoogeveen is embracing innovation and technology with a bold initiative that makes conventional library hours a thing of the past: the OpenBIB

At a time when every minute counts and traditional opening hours fit less and less with the needs of a modern society, the library in Hoogeveen is taking a leap forward. Time is precious, we understand that like no other. That is why, we are proud to introduce the OpenBIB – a smart and inclusive solution that gives members access to a wealth of knowledge and imagination from 7am to 11pm, long after most public institutions have closed their doors.

Extended Opening Hours with OpenBIB

We live in a society where everything is at our fingertips, often at the touch of a button. The library in Hoogeveen takes steps to offer its services as flexible as possible. Thus, the team is getting ready to fit in with any work schedule, no matter how hectic it may be.

Visiting the library can be challenging for those with busy jobs, active family lives and other commitments – we know that all too well. Thanks to OpenBIBit is possible to borrow or return a book, or access a wealth of information, at your convenience, even in the midst of an overcrowded schedule.

This initiative breaks the traditional view of the library as a place bound by strict opening hours. Instead, the OpenBIB puts the user at the center, and this is a welcome change that transforms the library into a forward-looking hub for self-development and leisure.

A Secure and Reliable Library System

OpenBIB uses the latest technologies to provide users with a seamless experience even outside regular opening hours. The process is simple: members gain access by scanning their membership card at the access reader. Once inside, they can walk around freely, borrow or return books and access digital resources.

The technology at the heart of the OpenBIB system was developed by ekz. This includes the OpenBIB terminal for access control, camera surveillance and an integrated system for lighting, speakers and alarm options. The system is designed with advanced security features to ensure safety, carefully recording every activity. An efficient management tool allows staff to manage the library.

Although the concept of an unmanned library is still relatively new, the library in Hoogeveen shows its potential to become a true pioneer. By bringing accessibility to knowledge, literature and entertainment into the 21st century, it shows how innovation and technology can come together to make the library experience accessible to all.

OpenBIB and Responsible Readers

This approach offers users the freedom they are looking for. However, with this freedom also comes a bit of responsibility. To access the OpenBIB outside regular opening hours, users must be members for at least three months, be 16 years or older and sign a contract agreeing to the house rules.

These measures ensure a safe and respectful environment even while staff are enjoying some well-earned time off. Although staff are not physically present outside office hours, the system has been carefully designed with security and ease of use as a priority. Members can easily gain access with their pass, while notifications about closing times are clearly communicated via an audiotape.

Hunger for Knowledge

More than an extension of opening hours, the OpenBIB initiative in Hoogeveen is transforming the library into a dynamic, inclusive and contemporary meeting place at the heart of the community. Something that, Bibliotheek Aan de Vliet among others, preceded them. It is an invitation to anyone with a hunger for knowledge, at any time.
